WOMEN THROUGHT HISTORY: BIOGRAPHY OF THE EMPRESS DOWAGER CIXI

Name: Cixi.

Posthumous Name: Short (Empress Xiao-Qin Xian Tsu)/Full (Empress Xiao-Qin Ci-xi Duan-You Kang-Yi Zhao-Yu Zhuang-Cheng Shou-Gong Qin-Xian Chong-Xi Pei-Tan Xing-Sheng Xian).

Birthdate: 29 November 1835.

Deathdate: 15 November 1908, aged 72 in Hall of Graceful Bird, Zhongnanhai, Beijing, Qing Empire.

Nationality: Chinese.

Why is she remembered?

She is remembered because she was regent of Qing China, her regency was from 11 November 1861 to 15 November 1908, the monarchs were her son, Tongzhi Emperor (1861-1875) and her nephew Guangxu Emperor (1875-1908). Cixi was one of the Xianfeng emperor's low-ranking concubines, but in 1856 she bore his only son. At age 16, she was brought to the Forbidden City to join Emperor Xianfeng's harem-which may sound like punishment to modern ears, but was consiered a swank role for chinese women of her time. The tenure was from 22 August 1861 to 15 November 1908, she was co-dowager (Empress Dowager Ci'an) 1861-81. Her son was Tongzhi Emperor, and her father was Yehenara Huizheng and her mother Lady Fuca.

Important Achievements

The Empress Dowager Cixi of the Manchu Yehenara clan, was a chinese empress dowager and regent who effectively controlled the chinese government in the late Qing dynasty for 47 years from 1861 until her death in 1908. She took power as empress, contrary to tradition and policy and wielded enormous power, opposing foreign influence and supporting the 1898-1900 Boxer Rebellion.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to enquire for information about how to build a community project in our town.

Coldsun is a big town in the west of Britain.
There are some funny places for elderly people in the public square of the town. For that reason, we would like to build a retirement home here with enjoyable activities and information for the elderly people of Coldsun.

I would be grateful if you could send me information about how to build it. If you have any questions about our project, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours faithfully,
Félix Rojas

AN ARTICLE: LIVING WITH A DISABILITY

PROFILE
My name's Félix and I've been deaf since I was born. When I was younger I had to learn special skills, like sign language. I'm at secondary school now, studying science.

Life is a bit different for me often. For example, every day I have to learn new words, and I have to know their meanings perfectly to express them with sign language. I can look after myself OK, but I need help with the meanings of the words because the people teach me them with sign language, and it isn't very easy. All the disabled people have a special programme on their computers (they are students) to learn or study more easily, and I have got one of those programmes of sign language called people's signs and it teaches me with drawings of people's signs to learn new words.

Therer are one or two things which annoy me: watching the cartoons on TV, for example. I know that I don't hear them, but they are very very funny. Sometimes some people in my city scream to me because they know that I'm deaf and they laugh at me. But usually people want to help me.
BIOGRAPHY OF ANNE FRNAK

Name: Anne Frank

Birth date: June 12, 1929

Death date: March, 1945

Education: Sixth Montessori School

Place of birth: Frankfurt, Germany

Place of death: Lower Saxony, Germany

Full name: Annelies Marie Frank

Anne Frank was a Jewish victim of the Holocaust most well-known for the diary she kept while in hiding which has since become one of the world's most widely read books.

Until around age eleven, Anne grew up without any care in a relatively safe Holland. In 1940, however, the Netherlands was occupied by Germany and the protection that Holland was able to provide to its Jewish citizens came to an end.

Beginning in 1942, the first Jews in Holland received call-up notices to report for the so-called "work" camp Westerbork. The majority of Jews obeyed the call-up to report for the "work" camps as fleeing was almost impossible and refusal to obey could lead to death or shipment to prison camps.

To avoid deportation or exile to the camps, Anne's parents went into hiding in the annex of the building that housed Otto's business. In order to protect Anne from the danger that threatened them, Anne's father told her only a few days before that the family was not going to a camp but was instead going to hide from the Germans.

Even though Anne saw hiding as an exciting adventure, the hiding place quickly became too small for her restless character. For more than two years, Frank described her daily life in hiding through writing.

On August 4, 1944, the secret annex where Frank and her family were hiding was discovered and raided by the Grüne Polizei (Security Police). Anne and her family were arrested and are quickly deported to concentration camps in Holland, Poland, and Germany.

The eight residents of the secret annex were transported to Auschwitz on the last train leaving the transit camp Westerbork. After a month at Auschwitz, Anne and her sister Margot were transported to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where thousands of people died everyday from hunger and sickness. Margot and Anne both contracted typhus and died within a short time of each other in March 1945, only a few weeks before the liberation.
A SPORTS EVENT

One day I was playing football.
Suddenly, I saw that the players were scared. They were running a lot and I felt scared too because there were a lot of of ovnis. I took a  photo when an ovni was killing a person. The next time I saw the players they were screaming.
A PHOTO COMPETITION

Yesterday I took a photo, but it isn't a normal photo, it is a very special photo. This football photo, is about competition.

I took this photo in a football stadium, at eight o'clock when the match was starting.

I was with my friends, and we were eating sandwiches and drinking coffe at the same time that we were watching the football match.

After the football match finished, the players started to sing and dance and they dressed up as girls and all the people of the stadium were amazed, and I took a photo of this moment.

I think that this photo is very spontaneous, dramatic, amusing, unusual, striking and powerful because of the situation (in this moment).
MY LIFE

I was born in Málaga in 2000. When I was younger, we lived in three different houses. It was in: Puerta Blanca, Alhaurín de la Torre and Cártama Estation. We've moved since then, and I've lived here in Cártama for eight years now.

My earliest memory isn't very clear. I was in a park in Málaga with my best friend Javier, my mother and Javier's father also stayed with us and we were smiling and laughing. I don't remember my first day at Primary School, but I remember the teacher's name, that was Mari Trini, and I think that I dind't cry in the first class.

I've been at Fernando de los Ríos Secondary School for four years and I still am here. I've never changed Secondary School. I think that I have got more friends, and I'm more sociable now! When I finish secondary school, I'll probably study at the university. Before I'm old, Iwant to visit Disneyland.
